This was found in a south shore area house that was being demolished.

At first I thought it was an old cast iron coffee table but further investigation shows its some sort of fancy flower planter.

The piece is about 75lbs. The designs on it are quite nice and it has two removable top sections.

Can anyone tell me more about this piece? Looks like art nouveau designs ? My guess is later 1800s?

Any bits of info would be much appreciated. I just get this feeling its something special.

Here is a few pics. Enjoy.

Looks like a cast iron garden table made to hold an umbrella pole.

It bears a striking resemblance to an old boiler/hot water stand. I've never seen one with an ornate cover like that but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

I am going to go with a sun dial with the center piece missing.

There are 12 points to the center flower but that doesn't work for a sun dial. How would you tell the time?

Hey Dave,

What are the dimensions of this piece? I think I'm seeing intertwined snakes and _________ in the design motif. Any evidence that it has held fire?

I was thinking wisteria, a popular flowering garden scape vine. It's a little different looking but if it's just representational it's close.
