Metal Button ...SS OF THE ROAD?

I found this walking in the field near where some bottles sites. I can make out "Of The Road" but then there is some thing with the last two letters being SS I think. Any suggestions of how to safely clean or what it might say?

that sounds right. Not to many words that end with ss and would make sence with "of the road"
