From time to time while cruising the Internet I find bottles and other closely related items misidentified by "experts", even well trained archaeologists.

Here's one that made me laugh a bit. While doing some research on the Portland Steamship Company, I have a few bottles and china tossed from their ships, I ran across this article: Portland Steamship Disaster.

The third photo from the bottom is captioned as a large mug next to some steam pipes. Unless there was a giant on board that is no mug. It is actually a chamber pot. I have just such a chamber pot including its cover that I pulled from the bottom on one of my dives at the old steamship wharf.

I e-mailed the woman in charge of the web page and I await her reply.

chamber pots are sometimes called "thunder mugs"[;)]

Very interesting, I did not know that.

Thanks!

I don't see anything for size comparison but if they're 2" pipes it's a bit small for a potty bowl. The one delicate handle doesn't seem right either.
Mug or soup bowl or something seams about right to me.
