Hi all!
Picked up a blob aqua quart with original closure today embossed " FR. Wehmann - successor to - DORMAN L. ORMSBY - A.B. CO. - 168th ST. East of - AMSTERDAM AVE. - NEW YORK"
On back: : Established 1835 - A.B.C. - BEVERAGES - D.L.O." all inside a fancy emblem.

Wehmann was shot and killed by Ormsby shortly after Wehmann took over the business. I have never seen this one before and was wondering if anyone else has????

Thanks.

Hello Mitch,

Welcome to the A-BN. How about showing us some photos, please. Does it have XXX's.

Mike has this one:

"Dormann L. Ormsby - A.B. Co.
Address: 168th st. east of Amsterdam ave.

Dormann L. Ormsby changed his brewery locations every 20 years or so and quit the business in 1876. This bottle variant is made by his son. The older variants would have "& Son" in the name. The company went out of business in the early 1900s.

There's stoneware examples as well: "Smith’s earliest dated, sided bottle, is marked “D.L. Ormsby / 1847.†Dorman Leonard Ormsby was a brewer from Manhattan who operated from 1847 to 1873. A later marked example carries the date “1849†with a “Star†and at the base the “Patent / Pressed / W. Smith†within a shield." From.

I'm wondering about that "FR. Wehmann - successor..." embossing. Was it FR. for Frederick or "FR." for "Frau?"

"Obituary

FREDERICK WEHMANN

On October 23d occurred the sad and tragic death of Mr Frederick Wehmann. Mr Wehmann was engaged in the soda water business at 39 Jumel Place, New York City which he purchased from Dorman L Ormsby about two years ago. A long series of disputes as to whether Mr Ormsby had the right to keep his automobile in the cellar of the house in which both families lived, and where Mr Wehmann carried on his manufacturing business followed the sale and purchase of the business and culminated in the final quarrel in which Mr Wehmann was shot by Mr Ormsby. A physician was immediately summoned and the injured man was hurried to the hospital where he lived for only a few minutes.

Mr Ormsby testified at the trial that he had fired his pistol at random and that he had drawn it only when forced to do so to save his life. After some deliberation he was acquitted.

Frederick Wehmann was born in Germany about 34 years ago When about 15 years of age he came to America and for a short time was employed in a grocery store A position was offered him with the Moran Bottling Co New York where he remained for nine years Later he was employed as a driver by Bruckner Bros which position he resigned to go into business for himself. Mr Wehmann is survived by his widow who will continue the bottling business." American Bottler, 1907.
