Here is a Civil War-era porter bottle from the Pennsylvania Coal Region that I would be willing to trade or maybe sell. Embossed in a rectangular slug plate, JACOB PABST/ PATTERSON, PA. 7" tall with double-collar applied lip, early smooth base.
I searched for one of these for a long time, as it was widely thought that this bottle was from another town of the same name near my local area. As it turns out, we were mistaken- it is actually from a very small, long-defunct mining village in Schuylkill county.
The few of these bottles that I know of are green, except for this one, which is deep aqua. These bottles date approximately 1861 to 1866, and are extremely hard to find. This example looks great on the shelf. It does have a base edge chip about 1 3/4" long and 3/8-1/2" wide, plus two small nicks on the lower collar of the lip. No cracks, repairs or heavy stain.
I like this bottle and would be happy to keep it, but I would be willing to trade it for a good early soda or beer from Lewistown or Huntingdon, PA. A trade would be my preference, but I will also consider offers to buy it if someone is interested. I can send additional pictures upon request, or, if you want to come and see it, we can arrange for that as well. Thanks. ~Jim
