That's no bedpan, it's a patented improved spoon-free soup tureen! The handle doubles as a tube from which one can slurp up the delicious contents... Perhaps you should test it out?

Sure seems to be!

It is a very nice item by the way, and in surprisingly good shape, but perhaps that's because you have high standards when it comes to redware bedpans.

I wonder if the decorative brown smears were applied by the artisan with the intended use of the piece in mind... [:D]

Yeah, the decoration seems a little odd considering. I guess I do have high standards for redware bedpans, although technically I have high standards with pretty much everything in my personal collection. It does have some minor chipping along the edge, but no cracks or major chips.
