Hey--me again--found a brown stoneware ink? 2'' high by diameter 2'' with a rounded 1'' opening--any ideas as to date?

AvoidingWork, if the one you refer to is like those I have for sale on eBay (Dumfries), they can be as late as the early 1900's or as early as the Civil War period (1861-1865). The earlier ones almost always have a slightly raised lip, but not always. These little jewels were made for many, many years and proved to be quite popular. They were durable and could be refilled over and over.

[:)] To AvoidingWork and Pontiled - hi guys! Over here in Oz, those small stoneware inks came in a range of browns, with a few lighter coloured ones. We tend to find them in dumps dating from the late 1880 to around 1910, but mainly and in far greater numbers pre 1900. Over here, they are called "Penny Inks", and are very very common. I have often found them discarded at various dumps, no one really wants them. [:)]

A slightly larger, rarer size is the "Two Penny Ink"

There are also conical stoneware inks and other forms.

Hi there from Wales I agree with Tandy about the stoneware bottles,We buy them for a quid or two in car boot sales. They look ok but can be found on a lot of dumps & river beds. Barnidoyll.
