The salt marshes have been calling my name this year, but Saturday was the first time I was able to finally get out and play in the mud. Fellow forum member Andy (what is your screen name lol) joined me. We found enough stuff to make it a fun outing, despite having the neighbors yell at us and call the DEM, who didn't mind us being there at all.

All muddy

I like that sort of response. Once while out walking the railroad track looking for and pulling Date Nails from the ties a guy who lived along side the tracks stopped his yard mowing chores and threateningly yelled: "What the hell ya' doin' out thar?" I responded in a VERY nasty tone: "I'm mindin' my own damned business. Whut chu doin'? With a dumfounded, stunned expression he went back to his mower and I continued down the track.

A lot of times we say ---- "We buried him in the wrong spot! gotta get um out!" works like a charm [:D]

That was my Dads nick name when he was growing up.

"Hudnut" ---- I guess it had to do with his hair in the 50s and the fact that his name was Richard [:)]

I never knew what that meant until I started digging bottles and coming on bottle forums. No one ever told me I was left in the dark a lot as a kid [:D]

Actually, Taylor minimizes the neighbors' ire. The dumping area is in mud flats that are exposed at low tide, submerged at high tide, and it abuts their property. Though they don't own the area, they seem to think they do. And to be fair, we are blights in their otherwise lovely view when we're out doing our thing. So they expressed their displeasure as soon as we got out there, telling us it was illegal to dig in the mud, and threatening to call DEM. We told them to go ahead, since we'd had visits from DEM before while digging other nearby marshy areas, who were completely unconcerned once it became clear that our quarry was bottles, not something living. Sure enough, a DEM agent arrived within the hour, and after talking to us for literally less than a minute, he departed.

But the neighbors weren't done yet. About a half hour later, two officials in a harbormaster boat began yelling at us from a distance (they couldn't approach closer because of the low tide) that we couldn't dig there and had to leave. We waded about 50 yards until we could get within easy communication distance, and then explained to them that we were looking for bottles, and that the DEM had already visited and had no issue with what we were doing. That last point seemed to mollify them somewhat, as they said they'd check into it and did not renew their order that we leave. That's the last we saw of those guys.

So, 2-0 in favor of the good guys! What really torqued me is that the neighbors falsely reported to the harbormaster that we were breaking bottles/glass! Of course, as collectors, that was the last thing on our minds. I didn't push the false reporting issue, but would have done so if the harbormaster had upheld his order to leave.
