I was out today, driving (bad day. Drives clear the mind). It was late in the day, and I wasn't even intending to look for anything to dig. I happened upon this old closed dilapidated bridge, and a rushing stream. I decided to take a walk. Since we had a TON of rain this week, it looks as if the creek rose quite a bit, and with the receding waters, I was able to get to this area, where I saw shards of glass.

Naturally I had to look more closely, though, I'll admit, I wasn't prepared. I had on running shoes, and was really just looking for a place to sit and watch the rushing water to clear my mind. But when you see tons of shards of glass, well, I guess that can also clear your mind (and get your heart pumping). I went back to the car to get my measly garden rake and shovel and my kid's beach bucket (I didn't even have gloves in the car), or the probe I brought from Chris at the Bethlehem show (lesson learned? always be prepared). It was late in the day and getting dark, so I only picked around a bit. There seemed to be tons of white jars (lots of whole ones with newer threaded lips). Lots of broken dishes (vintage, but I don't think older than say, 30's-60's? Hard to tell). I found the bottom of an old Clorox jar, and right along the creek, a piece of old stoneware. Nothing really whole, except for the one jar, but I'm curious if it's an actual dump, or just a surface dump. Or just a bunch of stuff that washed over into that area from the rushing creek. Definitely a place I'll have to go back to though and poke around more.

Should I look closer to where the shards were or go up further? This area of the creek seems to be something that fills up easily if we get a good rain, (I saw a lot of debris and flattened branches), but the actual main part of the creek was about 10-15 feet away. Experts weigh in here. I definitely want to do more hiking here, it was beautiful, but I'm bringing tools next time.

Gromit, if you look on the Bromo thread I think youll find that the cobalt glass youve got there is in fact, a melted Bromo. It appears to have the same type script at the bottom as the Emerson Bromos.

Often at the dumps where much was burned you will find similar melted glass of all types. Bromos are fairly common but folks love the color of them.

MI, I wondered if it was a bromo. You're right in that it does have the same shape. But because it was burned, I couldn't be 100% sure. I'll definitely check it out. Thanks.

I would guess there's a dump around there somewhere. Follow the shards upstream while sighting up and down the banks until you find the source. If you can't easily find where they originated from dig a few small test holes in the banks as you move along. Keep looking around at the lay of the land because where the surface of the ground looks humped up it might be the dump. Sometimes the hump is pronounced, other times only slightly arched. I'd look for humps around 10-20 feet wide. Good luck.
