18th century salt-glazed German tavern jug measuring approximately 9 5/8 inches high by 6 3/4 inches wide at the belly. The base diameter is about 3 1/4 inches. It has a "GR" cypher in cobalt blue in a central medallion with deep cobalt blue glaze decoration and incising. This German made jug was made for import to British market hence the Crown & GR for George Rex, better known as King George III. Prior to the Revolutionary War many of these jugs came over to the colonies as excavations of shards and complete examples are known in almost every Colonial city and town. This example hails from York County, VA.
