Here's the best resource I know for New York research. fultonhistory.com. I would reckon that the bottle was sold somewhere close to you. A boolean search with D N S* and soda might show up something. Where did you dig the bottle and what are the closest towns? I am originally from Syracuse and have quite a few central NY beers and sodas.
Caz - David Graci lists the bottle in his first book, but there is no information on who the bottler was or where it was from. I am originally from northern NY and have never seen one. The lip style is unusual for a NY stoneware bottle, it could even be Canadian. Can you tell the age from what was found with it? I would guess 1870's. Most of the script-decorated stoneware bottles in NY state originated from the Poughkeepsie area, which is pretty far from where you found this one. How tall is this bottle? Any chance of you posting a cleaned-up picture, along with what else was found in the hole? Very unusual find.
