Haven't been digging or buying, while I'm home for spring break I checked the local antique shops in town. they usually never have anything good but this time there was some O.K. stuff.
The open pontil i got for 5 bucks and the other one I swapped a box of brownie cameras for along with some other stuff

what was this used for and how old is it? I'm not very knowledgeable on pontilled stuff because I have so little of it

froms the stains you can tell it was dug. crazy to me that some lucky bastard could dig this and decide not to keep it. I haven't dug a single pontilled piece. Guess it was different in 60s-80s. wish they had left me a good hole or two

2 tiny chips on the lip

Bonus: This was one of the other things I got in my swap. Never seen a ring like it, looks eastern roman/byzantine (in terms of design, not age!) to me. If anyone knows anything about it let me know

Wow that ring is quite something! I've been trying to find out some information on it and haven't been able to find anything 100% conclusive, but have found a few leads.

This very similar ring is described as being from the Middle East and dating to around 1900 https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/a...e-silver-gem-set-intaglio-ring/id-f_20184512/ (No idea if the price they're asking is remotely realistic - would be great for you if it was!)

This one is quite similar as well, it's described as being from the Middle East and having "Moroccan vibes" https://www.stolenattic.com/fr/products/antique-carnelian-intaglio-ring-middle-eastern-silver

This somewhat similar ring is described as being from Turkmenistan: https://www.eyesgallery.com/product/massive-sterling-turkmen-carnelian-intaglio-ring/

This other somewhat similar ring is referred to as a match-maker's (as in helping people find their partner) ring from Laghman Province, Afghanistan. https://www.worldofbacara.com/listing/268451904/ring-silver-carnelian-red-coral

This one is referred to as being from Pakistan or Turkmenistan and being the type of ring reserved for tribal leaders https://www.trocadero.com/stores/pr...er-Alloy-Carnelian-Intaglio-Ring-Turkmenistan

Here are some fairly similar modern ones that are still being made, also attributed to Laghman Province math-makers. https://www.tribalmuse.com/laghamanilargesilvermatch-makersring-2.aspx

So ultimately my conclusion is that I'm not sure any of these people actually know what they're talking about, although it does seem that your ring most likely dates from within the past 150 years or thereabouts and comes from the Islamic world. Really regardless of the provenance it's still a fantastic piece, even if it probably isn't ancient!
