This is a neat bottle and probably was a soda made by Bolen & Byrne from New York, who accordinging to this newspaper article from 1903, was the 1st bottler of ginger ale in this country. The bottle, which has a Baltimore loop closure, is embossed 1895 on the bottom.

I also found this local New York medicine bottle. I think that it's interesting how people traveled from all over to deposite their empty bottles in the dumps of this little Virginia town. I also think that it is quite possible that there was a strong mail order business in place during the TOC era.

I also believe there was a lot of bottle re-purposing going on back then, as well as keeping them as souvenirs .. cool finds, btw!

Does that mean reusing the bottles? I can't imagine anyone re-using a medicine bottle that wasn't from the area that it was purchased from. I guess anything is possible. Souvenirs sounds like a possibility though.

It was actually done but I doubt it was very common practice. I can post one if anyone really wants to see one.

That's cool Matt. I would imagine that reuse was probably more previlent than we think otherwise there would't be so many bottlers using the phrase "This Bottle Not To Be Sold" which was used quite extensively especially on beer and soda bottles of the 19th century. I don't know how extensively this was done on other types such as medicines. Thanks for the link to your blog once again.
