I have what I believe to be a wine bottle from the 1940's (based on other bottles found at same dig site), but having trouble identifying the bottle makers mark. I searched the internet and all the usual sites that have makers mark symbols, but coming up empty.

So I scanned the bottom of the bottle and circled the makers mark for your inspection. To my eye, it looks like interlocking letters C and G, with a very small diamond at the site of interlock. I can get a higher resolution image and just focus in on the mark itself if the one I embedded is not clear enough. Take a look and see if the symbol looks familiar to you. Thanks. Shoveler.

■G C (entertwined angularly designed letters, vertically arranged)……….Glass Containers, Inc. (1933-1983),later Glass Containers Corporation, main office in Fullerton, CA, with several glass plant locations. Bought up the Knox Glass Company plants in 1968. This particular mark is stated to have first been used in 1945 according to Toulouse, but may in fact date from somewhat earlier. Peterson (1968:49) indicates at least one variation of the GC trademark was used beginning in 1933. Several variations of the “G C†mark exist, including one with the letters rounded (not angular), and another one with the letters touching, or nearly so.

Wow, that was quick! Would you think it reasonable to suggest that the 47 in 4725 is the date of manufacture? The 15 next to the symbol probably relates to the mold that was used, and who knows what the 25 in 4725 is. But both the 15 and 25 would seem to be too early. And as I indicated, the dig site dates to the 1940's, with a few representatives from 50 and 51. Thanks again.

Those numbers could mean anything really, without knowing the companies dating records I couldn't say either way...post a pic of the whole bottle and that might help date it...
