I found this one gallon crock in old Sacramento, California in the early 1980's.....It is debossed on it's shoulder: West 12 St New York.....There's a cute little cobalt swiggle on the front....The crock is an early salt glaze both on the inside & out....it is minus the lid.....This container was found near the river front where the miners used to debark onto Sacramento's embarcadero prior to leaving for the "gold fields".........Just wondering if you New York diggers know anything about this New York address....as far as a producer of pottery......Any help is appreciated.

I know that jugs are better then crocks as far as $$ goes...My interest lies in the history.

I've used this crock for years to hold fireplace matches on our hearth...something you might see in Better Homes & Garden...[:)]

Thank you in advance.

Google turns up a few results with that address or similar:
HUDSON RIVER POTTERY
L. Lehman & Co
W. A. MacQuoid & Co. Pottery Works (1863–1879)

You might try beginning your search with those companies.

The design at center might be what is called bee sting Mike , could be wrong , that's what I call it anyway . Wish I could give you some history about it , hopefully someone will perk up and come up with some info on it .
