True story. 1950's-2000's

Planned obsolescence was already in full swing in the 1950's. That decade witnessed an explosion of trendy mass-produced crap that was functionally or aesthetically obsolete a few years after purchase. The consumer-driven waste and environmental destruction going on now is largely thanks to the throwaway mentality instilled within consumers by industry starting in the 1920's or so.

Gotta go back to the 10's or early 20's to make the story work as it is intended to.
