lettering was crude and there are small bumps on each letter. Any thoughts on what the bumps are?

The bumps are from air venting, starting somewhere around the early 1880's. Earlier ones were only 2 or 3 & usually found on the shoulders or base edges. As they progressed they became more prolific and by the 90's were in the embossed lettering, often times blurring or obliterating the clarity of embossing. Some have speculated venting was to enhance embossing but they are found on unembossed bottles as well. Todays venting techniques completely mask the bumps and quality control cleans up any strays. Thanks Jack for the info. I thought this bottle was pretty cool and would draw a little talk but the forum seems to be different than a year ago. Its pretty dead.

Might be a couple factors at work. Possibly not everyone is happy with the new format. I know I dislike change in general, but always willing to give a try. Secondly, it is the frozen season, at least here, for digging. I think the other forums like "What is it" are likely more lively at this time. Just a guess. I will probably resort to viewing those forums during the tundra season more than digging & finding until the spring thaw. But I feel ya. It is always disappointing to go through the hassle of resizing pics and thoughtful posting to be ignored. Especially if one types as slowly as I do! Last possibility is the question was answered, though I can't believe everyone is "up" on air venting bumps! I had noticed them for years before discovering what they were, and approximate age when they first appeared. You can sill find them occasionally on modern bottles, most often on sodas. I had an ICB amber root beer that was "whittled" and had the venting bumps. I have a large size Kilmer's with serious vent bumps that make it almost impossible to tell if it was a cure or remedy variant. Only by the number of letters can you tell it was a remedy. Oddly the upper embossing is pretty clear. I also have a sample Foley's that has only the bumps and no embossing where it should be, making it a supposition as to what it actually was, though pretty sure it was a Foley's. Oops, gotta go.......Jack

I personally would have thought most people were up on the vent holes (save the newbies) but then again.... those GD irradiated bottle still seam like a plague.Myself, I just mostly read lately. Sometimes I might post ten in a day, others, gone for days at a time with no posts. I don't mean any disrespect.
