The best way I can explain it is through an example. While scrounging for privys in a town near Baltimore we found a standing red brick outhouse. On the back side less than a foot off the ground was a rectangular opening, almost the full length of the wall, as I recall maybe 12 inches or so...- MDdigger

Guys who have dug in DC have concluded that the pits were very shallow and/or were likley drawer privys. I know of guys who have probed empty lots all day, dug test holes and found nothing.
