The best way I can explain it is through an example. While scrounging for privys in a town near Baltimore we found a standing red brick outhouse. On the back side less than a foot off the ground was a rectangular opening, almost the full length of the wall, as I recall maybe 12 inches or so wide. Although the space was empty and covered over with hardware cloth, it was easy to visualize how a wooden poo drawer was used back in the day.

Now when the kids complain about cleaning their bathroom I have a good illustration for them! Or I could just use, 'When I was a kid......"
