I found a bunch of old fragments today and would like to date the spot before I go any further. This fragment is thick Aqua glass with a round bottom, a huge bubble and what appears to be S S S or maybe 5 5 5 embossed on it.
Any idea on age?
I was out hiking yesterday and spied some junk spilling down a steep slope. Three cars, two motorcycles, one washing machine and a LOT of bottles. A quick look told me that none of it was particularly old, mostly the 1950s. I need to go back with some heavy gloves (and a tetanus shot) to se what...
My interest in bottles started when I found a broken bottle with Mt. Kisco Bottling Co embossed on the heel. I contacted the local historical society and they sent me some archival newspaper articles about the company. Since then I think I have managed to connect the earliest known bottler in...
Just got a message via the town historical society Facebook page that a woman found a 'huge' pile of TOC bottles in the woods behind her house. The area was once a large farm and most of it is now a nature preserve. Her house backs up on the preserve and was once part of the farm. The trouble is...
Most of the ACLs I find in dumps are barely readable. This one is pretty good. I found it in Nelsonvlle/Cold Spring NY today. Just started researching it, waiting to hear back from someone who grew up in Newburgh.
And now for a different kind of glass.
From 1874-1888 Mt. Kisco, NY was the World's leading supplier of eyeglasses. Spencer Optical made 500,000 pairs a year in their factory. Then one day the lake that powered the turbines was drained. The company moved to NJ and the buildings stood empty...
So far a lot of the bottles I've found haven't been all that old. Mostly 'worthless' bottles from the 1910s-1930s. But I always like to find bottles with local significance. Mt. Kisco Bottling Co. was in Mt. Kisco, NY until the early 70s before going out of business. Like many local bottlers...
It was picked up by a friend at Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn. The ring at the top is plastic, so it's obviously not old. The bottom is convex. Maybe some kind of decorative lighting fixture?
Next week I'm headed to an island in the Hudson River that was inhabited by Native Americans as early as the 1600s followed by the Dutch in the 1700s and 1800s. There were settlements as well as a couple very large ice houses. Over the years as the Hudson was dredged, all evidence of human...
Can anyone shed light on this? All my searching turns up a construction company and a salon equipment business. The bottle was found adjacent to an old nursing home that was demolished.
Given the popularity of shows like Antiques Roadshow, American Pickers, Barnwood Builders and...Dirty Jobs. Do you think a TV show about bottle digging would be well received by the same sort of demographic?
When you find a fruitful dump or privy, do you do research to try and figure out where the bottles may have come from?
I have a local spot in a town park with hundreds(?) of bottles on the surface alone. They are all along a stone wall for maybe 50 yards. I assume it was an old property line...
The property that my house is built on was once owned by a girls summer camp. It opened in 1922 and as far as I can tell operated into the late 40s or early 50s. The land was later sold to a developer and a dozen houses were built in the late 60s. While walking my dog in the woods around the...
