Here is a picture of a couple of inks I recently dug from a 1840's pit.I had never seen the one on the right before,or any fluted bottle this small. It is embossed D & B.It was stained with ink so I know that's what it originally contained.I assume it stands for David & Black's.Any other thoughts? The other one is nice and tall and good Ohio aqua.

Sorry about the bad picture but this shows the fluted sides.

Awesome score's Doug! Your small ink is on page 56. Fig 191 in Covill's book. The only other reference so far to D&B was as you thought...... David's & Black. records indicate 1840 and possibly earlier. (reference found in Ink's 150 years of bottles. E & L Faulkner)

Digger Odell also has a picture of one in More Ink's Vol 11 . The listing states for a perfect one in 1998, it was $65-75....

Very nice Doug, congratulations on those finds! The dark aqua on the left is cool. That bulbuous neck is kind of unusual on an umbrella ink isn't it? I really like that color too. The little travelers ink is also nice. It's a wonder that thin flared lip survived without chipping. Good job and good luck digging and finding more neat stuff. Paul

That umbrella form is listed in the Whitney Glassworks of New Jersey catalog as a mucilage bottle.

Thanks for all the information & input.Good to see you back around Taz,been finding any good inks to show?

DP,does the one in the catalog have a narrow neck like this one?I've seen similar ones that had wide necks that were glues, but this one is narrower than an average umbrella.I have seen pontilled cones around here with neck rings also. Thanks for the information.
