Hello all:

Moved away from my municipal dump for a while. Got it in time out. haha Searching the elsewhere. Alittle help on somethings. Here is one of only 3 Civil War graves in the town. This place is a road that the state closed back in the early 80's. I'm thinking this place was already dug but looking for insight/photo's of what to look for in foundations, privies, garbage pits etc. In honor of Charles Webster who had no idea the internet would be running wireless through every room in my house. haha

I am amazed at the wonders on coming to a plot where ohh 3 houses were......cellars. barns..roads....stonewalls.....all this after 150 years. AMAZING and memorable at the same time. Imagining their thoughts as they build the houses....what the kids did...where were the fields....etc. NOW ... on to the glass and architechture....
.a foundation with 3 sides is a barn ???
a foundation with 4 is a house
the privies are back left and right
watch stonewalls for garbage either side.....

so this is a barn ......

I don't think that is a barn. Looks kinda big for a privy. Maybe, but I'm only guessing a place for coal or other rock like material. Or maybe it was near a barn or building for the ease of loading and unloading wagons?????

My cousin took me to some awesome old foundations. What should I be looking for? Please folks give me all different examples. I'm armed with a great map that shows household names, grist mills, churches, everything.....Not a Sanborn...I wish but its real discriptive. Help ! I have a probe and am willing. Madpaddla

Madpaddla, it’s hard to say what that foundation was but if I was to take a guess I would say it was a small stable for keeping animals in or for parking their carriage in. The way the rocks are set, I wouldn’t think it would have had to hold to much weight because they are not cut and fitted but just laid in place. If you do find the foundation of a house though, the privy would be in the back yard and look for an indention where it may have been.

Hope this helps and good luck, Tom

Sounds like a great place for a metal detector if you have access to one. I've heard of alot of invisible dumps found that way. Also check carefully all the low lying spots, creek beds and ravines. Good luck.

OK you found your first celler hole to say,try to figure out where the doors outside were,....
then think of where the best place would of been "especialy during winter when you dont wanna travel to go to the crapper-think that",the privys should be in direct sight of the celler hole.now for the dumps - any ravines around? if so do a check..
Also any impression in the ground around the celler would be a tip for a crapper hole or just a garbage hole "still good for bottles",or look for uncommon amount of foliage around a certin area....
