Hi all. I'm collecting Amber & Green embossed milk bottles. Keen to hear from anyone with items that might fit my collection. No irradiated bottles or pyro's thanks.
Hi, new collector, are irradiated bottles one specific colour, or a variety of colours? Here in Ontario there are few coloured, and I found a colbalt blue one today.......was it a scam? And, I really like your display, it really does provide a good demo of your wares! Thanks, Ted.
Irradiated bottles can be a variety of colors. Most common are purple & brown, but pink and grey can be found as well.
Purple indicates the presents of manganese in the glass & this would date the bottle between 1880 & 1917.
Smokey brown indicates the presence of selenium & would date the bottle between 1914 & 1930.
Pink or grey dates the bottle probably post 1910.
With the exception of the rare Sherman Hotel half pint, all other cobalt blue milk bottles are reproductions (or fakes).
All this information is nicely documented in Jeffery L. Giarde's magnificent publication Glass Milk Bottles: Their Makers And Marks.
Here's my collection of USA green quarts to date. According to John Tutton's book Udderly Delightful, there at least 12 more for me to collect. Can anyone help?
