1858 ??

found this in the back of a closet under the steps of an old house we bought--wondering if the date if from when it was made or is it some type of commemorative jar--is it worth hanging on to sence I am attempting to cut back on some of my clutter--Thanks

bottom of same jar--this jar also has seams on both sides and a greenish tint to the glass

Nov. 30th 1858 is the date that John Mason patented his closure on the jar.
If you look in the cross on the jar you might see CFJ co. in the branches of the cross.
That stands for Consolidated Fruit Jar company.

Hi, Yes there are a MILLION different types of the 1858 jar. Most you will see are fairly common, but many have a little value, and some are quite valuable. Try to find a copy of the Red Book of Fruit Jars, it has almost every fruit jar ever made in the U.S.

I have it in my lap right now and yours looks like a Red Book Number 1938. Half Gallon and Quart size aqua book price is only $4-6. [:(]

But watch out for light olive color, that would make it 60-80, or you could hope for a half gallon in teal blue $5,000-$10,000!
