Well, we finally found that dump and went on our first dig. We didn't find any really cool bottles that weren't broken into a hundred pieces, but you know I still had to bring some home anyway as souvenirs. And I had a blast. We did find something interesting though. I swear, I think it's a cannonball. LOL. It probably weighs about 5 lbs or so. Now, I live in NC and don't think we saw much civil war action here, so IF that's what it is, I guess somebody just threw it away. I posted a picture. And I'm hooked on dump digging. It was a great way to spend the day.

Wow, cool find - sure looks like a cannon ball. Only other things it might be are a gate weight (usually has a welded link attached) or shot putt (usually has pounds debossed and I think 6 and 12 lbs were standard) Someone here should be able to verify, until then I'd be calling it a cannon ball. Get a detector and look for more! Edit your picture post and check the little box that says embed picture in post, and your pic will show uo for all to see w/o having to open up the attachment (we's lazy) like this:

Whats the diameter of it? I've got one similar thats a hair over 3" in diameter. My investigation of it has came up inconclusive. I've been told it could be naval shot from the civil war, a 3lb solid shot from the Revolutionary War and even just a plain old mill ball that was used to grind up chicken feed.

My father in law found one of these in a field in Malvern, OH - the very same thing! I was about to post a picture and ask if it could be a cannon ball. Right now it rests in his flowerbed, but I keep explaining it would be much better off on my mantle : )

Where did you find the Civil War Battle maps, Tigue710? I've often wondered if there were any fought this far north or if it would be a shot from the Revolutionary War. My Ohio public school education left out the part about wars fought on Ohio soil. This coming from a girl who until recently thought "columbus sailed the ocean blue in the year 1642" (shameful, I know!)
