Ive recently moved back to the UK having ben living abroad for a while. Ive moved into my Mums house which is a veritable treasure trove of almost everything imaginable!

Anyway, we found a couple of antique bottles hiding in one of the many sheds and im not getting very far trying to identify these bottles. One of them I have seen for sale on ebay and will post about that a bit later on.

The interesting one for us though is a rather large square profile bottle with a very short neck and wide opening. It also has a matching glass stopper which is very shallow and a very loose fit. The stopper is marked Cannington Shaw & Co Ltd St Helens and the base has got C.S & Co Ltd 1088.

We guess this is a quart by volume and the bottle measures 11" high and 3 1/4" across all 4 sides and the neck measures 2 1/4" across. The cap is the same width and is no more than 1" thick. The top of the cap is depressed.

Paul most of the people who frequent this forum are from the other side of the pond. There was a discussion at this forum back in June .
https://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/m-417312/mpage-1/key-/tm.htm#417496 shedding some light on the company embossed on your bottle. There are some British members who check in from time to time but this place is over run with Americans[;)] and most cant be too much help as bottles from over seas are not there strong points.Hopefully someone will see this and add there knowledge to you.Good luck

I forgot to add this, nice looking storage jar,it almost looks like a low profile Codd stoppered top which the company who manufactured this used quite extensivley.

From what I can gather so far its either going to be a Pickle Jar or a Lemonade Bottle?

Initially we were thinking its an early Milk Bottle but cant find any evidence that Milk was ever sold or dispensed into a bottle that is at least 1 litre (2.2 pints) in volume.

The stopper is very loose so unless there is a missing rubber gasket and clamping device then more likely this is for dry storage?

Am browsing a few of the UK sites now but even google is not coming up with any refernces to bottle 1088

I'm gonna say pickles (possibly condiments though, and definitely not a beverage). And you're right about the stopper, it would've had cork around it so that it fit snugly...

Perhaps a tad[8D] Here is everything you ever wanted to know about where your bottle was manufactured but were afraid to ask.

Interesting. Not that I read it cover to cover though.

The $64000 question is then, do I stick it on ebay and see what happens or should I hold on to it until it can be positively identified?
