Here's a better (more obvious) example, an 1860's flask, gloppy top, but inside smooth as a baby's butt.......

Looking inside, you can see the glop on the outside but no indication of an applied ridge, very smooth.....

when it comes to bottles there are always exceptions to every rule..
Your Pierces all look like applied lips but I've learned to never make final judgements from photos.
One of the first decent bottle I ever found was an early emerald Dr Sage's Catarrh remedy, a medicine that was eventually bought out by Dr Pierce.

GAAD! That is a great little bottle in a fab color! I think the smaller ones like that and the sample med bottles are at/near the top of my favorites. BTW, I decided the C&Co. Pierce's are indeed tooled, as under a loop you can barely make out the tooled concentric marks on the necks. All the others are applied, though my favorite "Favorite" is smooth on the inside on one half and has a obvious ridge on the gloppy side. I read and reread the description on the historic bottle ID site and suspect the later tooled tops were indeed earlier than I originally suspected and likely overlapped with the later A&DHC's, probably closer to early 80's as opposed to '89 and later. I'm now confused after reexamining some of the pharmacy bottles that have what I always assumed to be applied tops due to the uneven drippy glass having no ridge from the addition of glass. Everything else screams applied, leading me to believe there must have been some quick, simple method of smoothing away that inner ridge. Just a suspicion...Thanks again Matt.
