It turned out to be a great weekend at a local auction. I contacted Greg Spurgeon about this and he was very suprised to hear about it. Anytime you can surprise Greg in the jar world that's a good thing. [;)]

He told me he was going to make a couple phone calls and see what he could find out for me. Greg is a great guy and a leading authority on jars and has some well deserved respect in the jar community for his knowledge and expertise. He contacted another legend in the jar world Tom Caniff about this Horlick's set. It contains what is now the 2nd known example of a milk glass Horlick's jar.

Tom wrote an article in the Fruit Jar Rambles section that I will post from the March 2011 Antique Bottle & Glass Collector magazine. Below is the first and only set of these to show up that is known, until this weekend anyhow. [;)]

Here is the set I found at the auction. A beautiful box with the half pint set. It's interesting that its almost identical to the first set that was found with the milk glass jar having a ground lip, and the three aqua, and two clear jars all being smooth lip.

It has the older type canning labels that was hand written on. It appears they were re-purposed for the contents the owner used. A mystery of a set.

The Horlick's jars are generally quite common and come in a variety of sizes and embossings. These are half pints with the original lids. The milk glass example really sets it apart and especially being only the second example known. Thanks for looking! [:)]

Quite possible it was. There are two nails on the underside of the lid and remnants of paper where I believe the label would have been similar to the other one. The other one appears to have been of a composite material where this one is oak.

Great story and find! Could it have been a saleman's sample?? I did not know it contained powdered milk. I have 2 of those jars, 1 pint and a qt. I love the thick embossing!

From the article the original case looks like reinforced cardboard or something. It probably disintegrated or the owner just liked the idea so much that a custom case was made for the Jars.
It's a shame you found the milk glass. Now with two known the market is saturated. I'll give you $5. [:D][:D][:D][:D]

I really don't know Eric but with the nails and a tiny piece of paper around it, i'm assuming that may have been where the Horlick's label was. With only this one and the other I just don't have a way to compare or know for sure.
