Hi again all... Pardon another newbie question. I have this little Anderson Dermador Bottle, and as you can see in the picture it has some flaws in it's manufacture. I wanted to both share the pictures, but also to ask if there is a bottle collectors term for bottles with such a flaw? I am sure there is a technical term for the condition, and would be interested to know its name, and what causes it, but also am curious if there is a general term used to describe bottles with manufacturing flaws? Heaven help me, I think I like these flawed bottles better than ones without the flaws. Am I alone in that, or are there folks who collect flawed bottles, like there are those who collect error coins?
Again... Thanks for the great education and help!

Red Matthews seems to be the biggest collector and most knowledgable in this category on this website. I'm not personally seeing any real flaws but he will tell us when he gets back online.

Yea, I admit to liking "Factory Flawed" Bottles and Insulators better than the perfect ones. You and I are definitely not alone. You will hear terms like: "Glop Top" when referring to drippy topped whiskey bottles, especially those from the West Coast. They are a definite plus, the cruder the better. The same is true in many / most catagories.

Most times the crudeness carries a premium price as long as it does not detract from an items appearance. A large open bubble can hurt value. As in all things: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". We had a thread here awhile back about "Your crudest bottle". Take a look through the archives, you'll get your answer.

Here's one of my faves

HELLO Owen - mtfdfire22 and botlguy; Well I guess you guys have me pegged. Thanks for the votes of confidence. Owen your "/ ANDERSON DERMIDORE " bottle is a really great bottle to illustrate the effects of a newbie bottle-maker. The bottle parison was inserted wrong in the final blow mold. It is a wonder that it didn't have a pinch of glass on the right side, like yours has botlguy. The parison was swung to the right and left hanging in the final blow mold - too long before he made the final blow to the parison. The swing of the parison put too much glass on the right side of the bottle. The time delay caused gravity to pull the hot glass down toward the bottom of the mold before the final blow was made.

So botlguy, the pinch of glass is to short to create a pinch of glass big enough to make a "Half Leaf Mold Cavity Repair" mark in the bottle. but obviously the parison collapsed enough to allow the internal surfaces of the parison to touch and pull the bird swing, when the final blow was made.

Also I will mention that in the early days of machine made jars, the tip of the plunger would get too hot and lift a spike of glass that would end up standing in the center of the jars bottom. These defects are hard to find because they were great danger if filling broke them and someone ingested the glass spike.

I hope this tells you what you can visualize happened. If not get back to me - and thanks for the vote of confidence.. RED Matthews
