Anyone have any ideas on what this bottle is?

It stands about 5 inches tall, the base width and length are both about 3 3/4 inches.
The weird thing is that the neck is off set! On one face of the neck is embossed:
"L D. PATENTED JULY 4TH 1871" Which is both cool and frustrating because its tough to find US patent info before 1872 [:(] Its also a weird piece because even with such a huge neck, the seam stops at its base.

Any ideas appreciated. Thank you.

That embossing looks faint enough that there could be more & maybe it just looks like whittling now...do you think it would be worth holding paper up to each side & going over it with charcoal to see if anything else shows up? I forget what they call that...[8|]

sorry folks for the super large pics [8|]
some how there still under 200 k though [:)]

Someone told me they thought this was a master ink,
which would be *great*, but I've never seen a master ink
anything like this, has anyone?
Such a large neck doesn't seem practicle for pouring...

How about a "bud" vase or some kind of holder for a single rose or flower? It looks like whatever purpose it was made for, they needed a very stable base to keep it from falling over or for balance?[8|]

The one post is correct its a battery jar and instaed of an acid fill line used the curve as line,very cool and collectable.

poisons4me: I didn't know there were batteries in the 1870's... learn something every day. Is there a name for this type of poison bottle? btw - the neck is 1 5/8" x 1 5/8 inches.

Batteries have been found dating back to the romans and before,you can make one work,fill to line (or bend in neck) with sulphuric acid and finish with distilled water,insert 2 lead plates-1 on each side of opening(cannot touch) and a wire off the top of each and presto-voltage (not much but there none the less,farmers put them in series,i found 12 in a wooden crate rig one time and still have 3.He used it for the fence..happy new year
