Bergner & Engel's beer - York, PA

Here's one I found at a local auction about 5 years ago just before we moved to a new house. It's been boxed up since then and I just found it again last night. I have no idea how a bottle from PA ended up in central Ontario.

The embossing reads:
B & E B.C.
G.W. NOEDEL
AGT
On the back:
THIS BOTTLE
IS NEVER SOLD

Apparently GW Noedel was the agent for selling Bergner and Engel's beer in York, PA - they were based in Philadelphia. The bailer and lightning stopper is in perfect condition and the bottle has never been buried.

This bottle is listed as scarce in the York bottle book. From the book:

Godfried W. Noedel was born in Germany in 1822. In 1851 he immigrated to America and settled in Baltimore where he was in the wholesale wine & liquor business. In 1874 he moved to York County and settled on a farm until 1877 when he moved to York and became the proprietor of a saloon at the NW corner of Centre Square. In 1882 he is also listed as an agent for Berger & Engles Brewing Co. He died in 1883 and his wife Bertha taking a partner Edward Ebner continued as B. Noedel & Co. until by 1887 Edward Ebner bought her out. Ebner, before coming to York had worked as a manager for Charles Engle's restaurant. I f you are considering selling it I'd be interested so please give me a chance to buy it.

Thanks cobalt for posting that, it's interesting to hear the history on this bottle. I wasn't really thinking of selling it but I may be interested in letting this one go if the right offer came along.
