Hello all. Here is a bottle I picked up on a recent trip to upstate NY. Embossed on the front "Tar Wild Cherry & Hoarhound". On one side "C. Sines". On the other side "Phila. PA". Bottom has a large tubular pontil. It is nearly perfect with some residue left from the contents and a slight haziness in some areas. Anyone know much about rarity or value? Thanks very much. stonebottle.

RE: C. Sines Horehound Pontil

Last picture, this one is of the rolled lip. I would like to know the approximate age and if this is common around Philadelphia or not. The side has "PHIL" and then an "A" is smaller size with a line under it. The "P" is also large but the "A" is smaller and has a line under it also. I would probably be willing to trade this for a stoneware bottle if anyone is interested?? Thanks for your help. stonebottle.

HI, I don't know the value, but it's probably fairly rare, I havn't seen on before. Nice bottle, I don't remember seeing Horehound spelled that way before.

It sure beats whorehound though![8D]

Kidding aside that is a different spelling than normal.I remember seeing a C.Sines bottle before just not that one.If one of the Philly guys don't need it,I may be interested in trading for it.Thanks for sharing it.

That is a somewhat common Philly medicine (if you pardon me calling any embossed pontil bottles common). Holst lists it as common and I have seen quite a few of them. There are two other C Sines bottles that are less common, C SINES' DYSENTERY COMPOUND PHILADA PA. and C SINES GENUINE ELECTRIC HAIR OIL PHILADA , PA (which is quite rare).

What's really confusing is there was a pharmacist named Simes in Philly around the same time who put out quite a few bottles.

GuntherHess,

Thanks for the info Matt. Do you know the date when this was used? Seems like it would be around 1850. Any idea on the value of one of these? Is it something found often in Philadelphia privies? Thanks. stonebottle
