If all it says in the slugplate is DURHAM, this is probably either the farmers name or the farm/dairy name. It's probably not the town name. If it were to say (well actually it can't "say" anything...) J. SMITH / DURHAM, then you could assume with some confidence that it was from the town Durham. But it could also be from another state with the town of Durham. You'd need to check the old phone/business directories to see if you can find a listing.
From your description, I would guess teens to 40's, but would need pics to narrow it down.
I've dug bottles from way out of their area. Chicago hutches and milks in Newville, PA??? They came in on the train with passengers. I've also suspected that people back then found just as much novelty with taking something marked with their town name when they went to visit another town with the same name in another state.
