Here is a tough early soda from near my area. Every other one of these I have ever seen or heard of has been pontiled, so I was surprised when this one arrived with an early key-mold smooth base. No complaints here, it's a hard bottle to find and I still got a helluva good deal, pontil or no.

J.J. SPRINGER/ HOLLIDAYSBURG/ PA, 7 3/8" in aqua. These come in varying shades of cobalt, green and aqua, all very hard to find. Hollidaysburg is about an hour up the road from me, so it's close to local. I like it [:)]

So much embossing, it won't all fit in one pic. Here's the other half.

Base. The key mold line is hard to see. The dark line is just some crud that I need to clean out. Definitely no iron pontil. It wasn't listed on Sodasandbeers as a smoothie, so I emailed Tod with the variation.

It's a nice bottle that I wasn't really looking for, but always said I wouldn't mind having. Now, I need to find the two from Huntingdon, right between Lewistown and Hollidaysburg, to complete my small Juniata River valley squat soda collection. ~Jim

Thanx, Rickster. It's a pretty neat little town. A lot of railroad activity, and a lot of historic houses. My wife's ancestors on her Dad's side were from around that area, too, which is kinda cool. ~Jim

Thanx, Jim. It's always a pleasure to find something like this. I wasn't even seriously following this bottle. I had it in my watch list on the Bay just for kicks. I just happened to log in, and it was still pretty cheap with only 4 minutes left, so I threw a bid at it. I figured it would go for way more than I wanted to fork out for it, but you never know unless you try [;)] Looking back now, I would have kicked my own azz if I had missed it. Been there, done that many times, but not this time [:)] ~Jim

The seller's pictures weren't great, it actually looked like it WAS pontiled, with no remaining iron residue. It also looked closer to a light cobalt as opposed to aqua. Not that I'm complaining, but I didn't expect to come close to winning with what I bid. There are several other nice aqua early smooth base sodas from the surrounding areas that I would like to find. Lock Haven and Huntingdon have a few, plus a couple of rare pontiled ones. I have Lewistown's two known types, a green IP and an aqua smoothie, but I keep hoping for an unknown one to surface. ~Jim
