Yesterday on the drive home from work. I drove past a site where they were putting in footings behind an old building in town. The old building was once a saloon for one of the local brewerys. I decided to check out the site for glass and other items. To my surprise, one part of the site was littered with broken jugs, beer mugs, shot glasses, wine bottles, and other items. This area was about 40 feet from the back door, right in the middle of the new footings. I poked around and found a couple of intact bottles, nothing special. There is lots of dirt with lots of broken glass to explore, but daylight was fading fast.

When I was exploring the far West end of the dig site, I found some type of pottery jar laying in the mud, way away from the other broken glass. I am not sure what this really is, any ideas?

Fun story and photo of the site. Looks like just a nice crock to me. Any markings on it? I would definitely go back. Take it all and sort it out when you get home!

Nice finds, This weekend might be a good time to go back and scratch around if no work is going on. Another thing you could do if you have the time is to follow the dump trucks to where they are dumping that extra dirt. You might find some more stuff? Too bad they arn't digging a basement. [sm=tongue.gif]Good Luck

To me,as a fine dining server, that looks like a wine chiller that would be put in the cooler and taken out to the table with the bottle of wine sitting in it. If i had a pic of what we used now you would see it's very similar.Just a thought. Hoss

2 things. No holes and I believe that is wear and tear marks in a circular shape on the inside bottom of the pottery as seen in the photo.

Almost all of the sites by me they put up chain link fence around the area before they even start digging.

We always find a way in over the fence. Last time we hiked over we looked all over the site and even saw the "watchman" snoozing in his pickup truck. Needless to say we're quiet and don't attract attention.
