Saw this 1855 reference for the Charles H Clarke company. Might be a clue.

Hey Jeff,

"CLARKE'S INDELIBLE INK.

A Caution to Families. — Pilfering is becoming so noto-
rious, that it behoves families, gentlemen travelling, and
others, to adopt those measures which may as much as
possible contribute to prevent and detect it. In the ar-
ticle of linen or cotton apparel, silk and cotton stock-

ings, table linen, &c., this cannot be better effected than
by marking such property with Clarke's Indelible
Permanent Ink, which from a test of 50 years is found
to be an improvement on the common durable or perma-
nent Ink, and much superior to any of those Inks which
are used without a preparation." From.

The above link is to a digitizes catalog of N. D. COTTON, 13 TREMONT ROW, BOSTON, but you can't see that, ya gotta go to this Digitized Catalog.

There was some Clarke's Indelible in the inventory of the Philadelphia College "THE BEING A PRICE CURRENT OF DRUGS, MEDICINES, PAINTS, DYE-STUFFS, GLASS, PATENT MEDICINES, &c. PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE OF PHILADELPHIA:
PRINTED FOR THE COLLEGE, BY SOLOMON W. CONRAD,
1826.

C Cajeput Oil - Cephalic Snuff - - Cheltenham Salts - - Ching's Worm Lozenges - Church's Cough Drops - Clarke's Indelible Ink - Chamomile Drops - Cologne Water - - Columbian Oil Court Plaister, black ... flesh coloured Cough Lozenges -" From.

"Title Mark your clothing with stencil name plates and Clarke's indelible ink

This 1890 Catalog of Chas. H. Clarke seems to be a different Clarke alltogether.

Now, for all that, I'm still wondering for what "Burm." is an abbreviation

It seems odd that someone would go to the trouble of abbreviating a five character term - "Burma" - to a five character term - "Burm.".
