Digging in Northern Michigan……Part 3, Paul Calls It!!!
Sometimes permission can be the hardest thing in the world. We knocked on the door and explained that we collected antique bottle. We got the very terse reply of “there ain’t no bottles back there!â€. I quickly tried to explain that we were looking for old trash pits when she quickly interrupted me and said “Go Ahead!â€. I was surprised, to say the least, in her quick turnaround. We were probing when the neighbors got a little anxious about what we were doing back there. After a quick explanation, she let us probe her yard also. Terry, Paul, and I lined up again, and Paul had the hot hand and hit another pit. We helped him open it up, and he starting in on it with the help of KJ. Terry and I started in the next lot probing. Terry hit a super long privy that probed out to be about 10 feet long! We were feeling trash all along the way, and quickly opened it up with my son-in-law’s help.
Anyone who knows Paul knows that he is passionate about Carter’s Cone Inks, his fantastic run of colored Piso’s and go withs and now his latest passion, Bixby’s! He has a tremendous run of colors and styles. When we hooked up with Terry, he told him he wanted to dig a green Bixby’s. I gave it a good laugh, I have dug hundreds of different Bixby’s, and nothing ever other than aqua.
Paul’s pit had a super thick trash layer of bottles and broken pottery, it dated to the late 80’s, early 90’s, it was a skinny two foot wide, four foot long, and about 5 foot deep. Terry and I were working on our pit when we heard a bunch of excitement from Paul’s direction. He had just pulled out a fantastic yellow green, citron BIXBY’S!! Can you believe it?? I don’t think I have ever heard of such a thing before. We all had a great laugh at that one and were super excited for Paul. Here is a pic of the bottles we dug, his Bixby’s is on the upper right.
