Hey all myself Soddigger,Midway49 and Big Mike got together to do some digging on a permission that I had been told was dug but that some of the pits were not dug to there depths.Sense the property was so old, Back to the late 1700s and we had it on good info as to were the dug pits were and the ones that were not finished. We decide to re probe and re-dig .
This dig would take two of our Saturdays. In all we found that there were 7 privys. 5 that had been dug and two new ones that Midway probed out. Well the first Saturday was spent on the two newly found pits.Mike and Soddigger on one and me and Midway on the other. As we dug down nether pit was giving up much more than rich black soil and ash and just enough broken pieces to keep us going. It seemed that mine and Midways pit was early 1800s while Mike and Sod was mid 1800s stuff .Well to our dismay at the end of the digging day it was evadent that the pits had been well dipped only leaving scraps in the thin used layer with only shards and fragment of what had been there.Being a little disappointed it was still better to dig pontiled pieces than to not be digging at all in my book.Well we filled them in pack up and set our selfs to meet the next week end to redig thre dug privys.
Saturday came me and Midway stated the one that we knew was the shallow one out of the two to be redug.Sod and Mike on the deep one that we were told would go 12 feet or better. It was clear that the one I was in was a rock lined privy after we got into it.You could tell were it had been dug and were they had stopped .There was'nt much coming out thats why the fellows before had given up on it .While we were digging dirt .Mike and Sod were digging whisky bottle and plain med .Lots and lots of Whiskey bottles .At the bottom of the pit myself and Midway were in there was a used layer but agian with only scraps of what had been. This pit had been a really early one to with early pontiled bottoms and a big piece of a slip ware plate just nothing whole.
Well we filled it up and started helping Mike and Sod who were just getting to the undug part of the pit they were in . After getting to there the bottles started to slow down but Get better .The first good bottle to come out was a druggist thats highly sought after pretty close by.Any way there were enough of those duggest for us all to get one .Those were the prizes for the day.By the time we finished we were at 14 feet and there were a few stoneware pieces in the very bottom used layer. While I know a lot of you might think we were crazy for re-digging .I think every one had a great time .I know I did .I'll post a few pics of some of the stuff. Thanks for reading and looking all.
Bill

Hey Bill,...like you said,...better than no dig! Those pontiled shards would make me keep going too...Glad you found something for your efforts! Which Wampole's did you find? I have one from years back that I dug when Penn Digger and I first met...It says "Pottasafras" on it...
