For the last couple of digs, (as many of the forum members know) I have been in a slump. Im getting plenty of permissions, but the holes were for the most part empty or completely empty. Was starting to feel jinxed and dragging diggers from all over to practice diggin holes. Finally though I may have broken the jinx. Thursday I and a buddy(Marvin) went an dug another permission of mine. It was raining but well worth it. The pit turned out to be pontil aged ! For the most part they were smashers. We dug ALOT of broken redware and salt glaze. So smashed to pioeces wasn't worth keeping the shards. We did score 2 smooth base sodas, pontil ink? , and a pontilled Rowans vegetable tonic. plus some other bits and pieces.

My share of the loot. Big score was the Gravitating stopper bottle. Its a rarer one from Lancaster. [:D]

Awesome bottles. Im from York and have been digging dumps for a few years now. Ive got to try and dig one of these privies soon. I cant find anything with that kind of age in the dumps Ive located. Are most of the folks that you ask permission pretty interested in letting you dig up their yard? I want to knock on some doors but figure most people wouldnt want a stranger digging a big hole in their back yard. Do you usually offer them money or some bottles? How does that work? Any info would be great. Thanks

Just checking out the picture again. The second one from the right, is the last name on that Wacker? Would that have been a beer bottle? I collect old beer cans as well as bottles and have been hunting an old cone top beer can from Lancaster from Wacker Brewing Co.

I do pretty well with permissions. Some advice I can give are simple. First dont look like you wanna rob the place. What I mean is wear decent clothes (dont mean suit & tie). Nothing with holes or dirty. Take the time to shave to. First impressions are everything. [;)] Have a speech prepared. Know what your going to say and practice before you get to the door. Have some buisness cards printed up. They are cheap and show you got your act together. Explain what exactly you wanna do and what is all involved. Reassure their yard will be better than it is now. I always show my ID as well. Makes people feel safer and start to trust you with digging in their yard when they likely won't be home. Afterwards ALWAYS go back and fix the yard. The pit will sink, and will need another go over. You would be surprised at the referrals you will get from making it right. Lastly if they rent ask for the landlords info. I get half my permissions from landlords. Dont forget landlords usually own more than one property,a dn that could pay off big time. Hope this helps and good luck

Yes it is a Joseph wacker bottle. I've never seen a cone top from the brewery. I'll keep an eye out.

Hey thanks a lot for the advice on getting permissions. You gave me a lot to think about. The Wacker cone top beer cans seem to be pretty rare. There are three or four different ones and they all go for several hundred dollars and up in good condition. Thats a bit out of my price range but if you ever find one thats rusty or a little beat up Id still buy it off of you. Heres a picture of what one of them looks like. Take care and happy hunting.
