Hi folks, been busy digging and came across another unusual bottle. It appears to be a large pickle bottle, clear glass, BIM with a crudely tooled top, 9 1/4" tall and 2 7/8" X 2 1/4" across it's footed base. The embossing reads:P.P.CO.As you can see in the photo it is an unusual diamond shaped bottle. I am not sure but I believe the "P.P." stands for either Portland Packing, or more likely Pacific Packing. Has anyone ever seen another one like this? If so was it for pickles, or was this more likely for capers or something else? Any guess as to an aproximate value? Any help would be appreciated.

Diamond Shaped Pickle....Any one know anything, ever seen one?

I'm still looking all over the internet for whatever I can find on this one. Does anyone know of some other good resources for identifying bottles such as this one? Guessing by the lack of response there must not be any info out there on this one. Has anyone ever seen anything even resembling this bottle? What are the chances this is a previously unknown variant? It occured to me this may not have been a pickle bottle, if P.P. is Pacific Packing it could have been made for oysters, anyone have any thoughts on that idea?

RE: Diamond Shaped Pickle....Any one know anything, ever seen one?

WILL LOOK MORE IN BETTY ZUMWALT'S FOOD BOTTLE BOOK. SO FAR ALL I CAN COME UP WITH IS THE PIONEER PICKLE AND VINEGAR WORKS,STARTED BY ADAM BERGMAN IN 1878 ,LATER 1891 WAS BERGMAN & CO. PIONEER PICKLE FACTORY,. FOUND IN 1910, BY 1920 ADAM BERGMANWAS LISTED AS WORKING FOR PACIFIA GAS & ELECTRIC CO. AND NO MENTION OF THE FACTORY.SO THE CO.WENT ON AT LEAST 1910,BUT PROBABLY A BIT LONGER.STARTED IN SACRAMENTO,CAL. PIONEER PICKLE CO.,COULD BE WHAT YOUR EMBOSSING STANDS FOR,BUT I HAVE NO REAL EVIDENCE FOR THAT. ANYWAY IT IS A START. YOUR BOTTLE LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE FROM THE 1910 RANGE OR SO. WISH IT WAS AMBER,THEN......WOW! JAMIE

Wow! Thanks for the help Jamie, thats alot more info than I have found. I have had little luck looking around the internet, and only came across 1 local digger who thinks he may have dug one about 20 years ago. This was dug in a hole that started at the top in the 1890's (the hole was covered by another building at the TOC, according to the maps), and by the time we got to the bottom (@27') we were pulling out 70's bottles, this one came out about 10' to 12' down, right about where the "fill" started becoming privy, so the age sounds about right for thePioneer company. I really do appreciate the info and look forward to hearing if you find anything else.
Thanks again............DonD.
