a friend of mine told me where a dump he used to dig is was. It is at the corner of a field, beyond the hedgerow on the banks of a swamp. It took a while to find it but I did. It looked pretty old because it had pieces of local beer and milk bottles on the surface. It also had a bunch of barrel hoops and junk. If the weather is nice 2day I will go back with a shovel and take pics.

Joe always says, "Look for barrel hoops", so I would say that is a great spot to dig. I hope you take some more pics and/or tell us about your dig.

The wierd thing about this dump is that it seems the further up the bank I went, the older the shards got.....isn't it usually the other way around? Well I still havn't actually dug here yet just scratched the surface so....

That's not TOO weird.. if the dumping occured on the same spot, at the top of the incline, some of the trash would have slid down the slope, especially later on as the pile grew.. I'd say it's shovel time, Alek!

Shovel time indeed, Alek. If there is that much on the surface and the dump was used for a while, there's a good chance that you will pull out some keepers in good shape. Surface bottles often fare poorly. What the winter freezes didn't bust, the kids over the years with their slingshots and BB guns probably had a field day playing shooting gallery with. I know a lot of older guys who remember wasting embossed milks, sodas and other bottles by the hundreds just for fun. The good news- I have never met one of them who actually dug for their "targets". They just grabbed what was lying around and blasted 'em, so anything that was buried should be safe. ~Jim
