Thanks for the help and the kind words guys and gals. The matches fit just like they should so I officially dub the item in question a match thing![:D] We went back today and found a few more 1880's whiskeys and wines, another pontil scared cobalt blue marble, (burned)[:mad:] some Eagle buttons, and a really cool old coin we need help with. I posted a pic of it in "Unexpected Discoveries" if anyone cares to look. Happy Diggin, Kelley

Nice finds, Kelley! The match safe may be the best of them. Woody identified it correctly.

There are currently 280 "match safes" for sale on eBay, some with medium to big tickets. Just scanning the first page, I can see that yours would be described as a "match safe wall pocket" or something close.
