For Red (Bird swing and Leaf)

Jamie asked me to post the following pictures. First is the bottle Jamie got for Christmas from Sam (athometo). Even though it is machine made and probably from the 1930's, Jamie says it has an unbelieveable bird swing. He said he thought those were only found in blown bottles.

This is an early machine-made Chero-Cola bottle that a kid traded to me at the local bottle show. I didn't pay much attention to it at the show, but when I got it home it looks like it has the leaf thing that Red and others have talked about. It is definately not a crack.

The bottom looks like it's been ground down. Strange! Jamie asked me to post these just because they are oddities and maybe Red or somebody might know more about them.

Angelpiece and Jamie - Your both right. The bird swing can happen on an ABM machine or with a mouth blown bottle. It happens when the parison collapses enough so the inside surfaces stick together when the parison is transferred from the parison mold to the final mold; or in the case of mouth blown glass - if the inside walls touch during the bottle makers motions. They are especially bad in bottles made on an ABM where the parison has to be inverted from the blank side (finish down) position to the mold side (finish set on top of the closed mold.

Now then the other bottle gets a different reaction from me. I would like to get my hands on that Chero-Cola bottle - especially before my trip to Corning Glass next summer. That is a relatively late crown finished soda and it does not seem right to me that it has the Half-Leaf type of cavity welded repair. The surface of the glass in the leaf looks to have the washed out carbon appearance of the welded iron refill weld.
It is certainly not a flap of glass but it is after the mold repair period of the other repairs. I really appreciate your showing it to us. RED Matthews

THANK YOU RED! I WAS REALLY HAPPY WITH ALL SAM SENT ME FOR CHRISTMAS IN THE GIFT SWAPPING! I WAS SURPRISED WITH THE BIRD SWING CAUSE I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE IN A MACHINE MADE BOTTLE! [SAM'S WIFE MAKES SOME OF THE BEST FUDGE NINA AND I HAVE EVER EATEN!!!]

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE CHERO COLA. JUST SOME KINDS STRESS LINES IN THE MAKING THAT JUST HAPPENED TO COME OUT IN THE LEAF FORM? THE LINES CAN BE FELT ON THE OUTSIDE,BUT WHEN I RUN MY FINGER ON THE INSIDE IT IS SMOOTH.

THE INSIDE LIP IS ROUGH AND LOOKS LIKE IT MAY HAVE AN INSIDE LIP CHIP.

THE BOTTOM AS YOU CAN SEE IS NOT SHINY AND LOOKS GROND DOWN,THE PLACE YOU CAN SEE ON THE BOTTOM ALSO LOOKS DONE IN THE MAKING AND NOT CHIPPED.
