Hi RED - this is the bottle I was telling you about. I'll have it in the mail Monday. It's a Hay's Hair Health. It looks like they tried to smooth down the original mold and re-use it for the same product. Not really sure, but that's why I'm sending it your way. Hope it's something new for your collection.....Ron

Ron, That is a great bottle for my traveling bottle club brief-case. Thanks a lot. The previous lettering in the original mold was normally peened out using a hammer and a blunt ended punch usually.

The problem is the earlier lettering looks like it was filled in with a different method than I know about. In fact, it is obvious, that the earlier lettering could have been left raised on the iron, which would have created recessed lettering in the glass. This is not a common practice because it would have made it difficult to create the flatness of the panels background area.

If that were the case, the lettering would have to have been chipped off of the panel, and that action would not have created the small dotted areas where the lettering had been. It is also quite obvious that the end of the peening tool was round, and I can not explain the little dots of what look like raised points on the glass.

It is also obvious in the narrower side panels, that are the showing new lettering created by glass blowing into the cut letters in the iron. Also there exist the dotted metal in the cavity from the previous lettering in those side panels.

So this is a neat example of a bottle mystery. I may be able to tell more about it when I have the bottle in hand. No doubt I will have to take the bottle to the Corning Glass Museum and maybe even the Wheaton Glass Museum, to try and find someone to explain the process used.

If any one else on this FORUM has an opinion or explanation. Lay them on us.
This one is fascinating. Thank you Ron, for thinking about my interests.

Neat bottle. Not often the resident expert on bottle manufacture is stumped...

Thanks Red. I am curious about it myself. Please do follow up when you get a little
More insight on it. I sent it off today and I included a second Hays bottle, without
The unusual marks, as a comparison....Ron
