Hi,
I recently came across a lot of bottles/jars of various sizes somewhere in the UK. They were obtained them from the grounds of an old military barracks (which therefore means these are Victorian/Edwardian). I've limited knowledge of bottles, and while most seem generic food, chemist, beer, wine etc (fairly common Pattersons and the like) I just thought I'd ask here in case I've stumbled across anything noteworthy. I enjoyed locating all of these and cleaning them up, but as I'm emigrating soon I'm having to sell them on, sadly. I have about the same amount again that I haven't cleaned up yet! Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Best "first post" ever IMHO, great job with all the pics, I don't know anything about UK bottles and nothing jumps out as me as "special" but hopefully someone who knows will give you all the details....Welcome to the site....Jim

(which therefore means these are Victorian/Edwardian).

Hello celestograph,

Welcome to the Blue Pages, and thanks for showing us this cavalcade of commons. [8D] Some lovely glass, mostly Edwardian it appears. The registration numbers help date:

If this one is 405660, it dates to 1903

P1190887.jpg

Registration # 65535 something dates to 1916,

per this site.

The Holbrooks, Camp Coffee, Club sauces, Bovrils etc. are all dead common, I'm disappointed to advise.

Hello, There was one square essence bottle that had unbelievable this heal tap on the left hand side. It that bottle got tapped on the edge of a sink or cabinet the contents would have been on the floor. It is a great example for my traveling brief case. RED M.

Thanks for the very helpful replies. I'm heading back for more later this week, though it seems to be more of the same kind of stuff. Will look out for this tin beer cans! Closest I saw was a rusty old saucepan

Interesting bottles and splendid photographs, thanks!

Considering the lack of the expected kinds of bottles (embossed chemist and beer bottles, stone ginger beers and pots, etc) I am guessing that these were recovered near or on the surface of the dump. They may be bottles unearthed by a digger in the past and left behind, after taking what the digger wanted to keep?

If these are indeed surface recoveries then it is probable that if you dig down several feet into the dump you may find some pretty interesting and perhaps valuable items not presently represented in your collection. Good luck!

We find many of the same bottles here in Nova Scotia. Lots of British wine , beer, product jars , Camp Coffee , Bovril's,Holbrook etc. Your best bottles in my opinion are the little crocks in the last picture. With 4000 miles of ocean between us it seems that many of your bottles made it across ' THE POND '...keep on diggin'...[:)]

Hello celestograph,

if you ever consider letting go of the 2 small Walker's Kilmarnock, drop me a PM! I'm always in the market for these little gems. Welcome to the Forums!
