So I collect old bottles but don't know much about them honestly. My aunt knows this and when my grandma just past she made sure I got this bottle from them that they used as a bank. My aunt claims this bottle to be very old but I believe it to be maybe mid 1900s. It's hard to see but the bottle says in the front "The Christian Brothers of California" underneath it it states half gallon. Above Christian Brothers it says in smaller letters "Federal Law forbids sale or reuse of this bottle" in all caps. Please help, I would love to have some light shed on this family's keepsake. Thank you!

You're correct on the date range, it isn't a very old bottle. That "Federal law prohibits..." message was introduced at the end of Prohibition and continued until 1964, so mid-century is spot on. Yours looks like it may have a 1969 date code on it, which postdates the mandating of that message, but not everyone would have immediately gone out and had a new mold made once it was no longer required so 1969 is within the realm of plausibility.

And if you didn't already know, Christian Brothers is a brand of brandy which is still available today.

I had no idea it was brandy. Thank you so much for the information. Much appreciated!

Interesting bottle. Could you please tell us what that squiggly mark is that's next to the 69 and looks like a dollar sign? At first glance I thought the mark in the center was for Owens-Illinois, but upon closer inspection I see that it's an L in-a-circle which is most likely for the Latchford Glass Company, who used the mark from the 1930s to the 1980s. Another thing I am a little confused about is the finish / top of the bottle. I looked at dozens of ads, all of which had good pics of their bottle, and it appears they switched from a cork stopper to a threaded cap around 1960. Throughout the 1950s they show a cork stoppered bottle, and then around 1960 they start showing threaded cap bottles. Maybe its nothing, but now I'm wondering if its a 1960s bottle or possibly earlier. It kind of depends on the weird mark I'm seeing - which might just be an optical illusion and/or I need new glasses. ???
