Hi! Here are some ink bottles from my brother's collection that I'll
be listing on eBay in the coming weeks. I wonder if any of these are
particularly rare or valuable?

Some of the names from the bottles: Carter's (several) / Caw's Ink /
John E (or &?) Davids / T. Davids / Waw Waw / J. & I. E. M. (several) / T. Sisson & Co. /
Mounsey Preston Salts (does this not belong in this grouping?) W. E. Bonney /
Sanford / Stylized Initials: CCP (?), Kosmian Safety / another stylized initial one: W W ?

Any help/information/value/suggestions will be very much appreciated! Thanks!

OMFG!!!!

I'd do terrible terrible things to get my hands on that collection you have newbie..
I bet the value I see there exceeds $2,000.00....one of the turtles could be worth double that if it's a rare Davids..Too bad the igloo/turtles aren't colored like some of the cones and masters..

He has good taste! What is the name on the 2nd ink, first row left hand side, it looks like it is a draped ink on my screen? If you put them out on eBay make sure you post them under pre 1900 ink bottles and not Ink wells.... If had have good pix and details they will pretty much sell themselves.... I collect inks what is your user name on eBay? Taz

Hi Oldtimer! Well, it sounds as if these inks are
desirable....that's good to hear! I've attached a
few photos of the two David's....the small one in
the center reads: John E. David's / & Co. / INKS /
N.Y. on bottom. The larger one (what style is that
one called?) says: T. David's & Co. / Patd Nov 7th 76.
Which of the David's is the best?

Hi Taz.....I've attached 2 photos of the one you were
wondering about. It is not embossed, has a rough
pontil, an unridged square where label must have been?,
and is in mint condition. Any thoughts on year or value?
My ebay name is: capecoddertreasures.

Thanks both of you. I'll be happy to hear any thoughts
from you guys and anyone else regarding this collection.

The year on the pontiled ink would be 1830-1850 + or - 10 or so..I dont think the squat david's are a big price tag item, a rough guess $25.00 they could stand a good tumble to fetch a premium.... My gut feeling on the pontiled ribbed ink... hmmmmmm.... $250.00 maybe more if properly presented. Here is the closest I could come in the Ink bible by Bill Covill Jr. Good luck and see you at the auction! [;)] Taz

I assumed the turtle / igloo inks might have been davids...I have seen them listed as big $ inks..but ink collectors are very picky, and one tiny difference can mean 1000 bucks...I am no expert by any means.. Taz is though!

Hi! Taz, when you mentioned Bill Covill, I remembered that
the book he wrote was in my reference library. He was from
Cape Cod and two of my brother's inkwells are pictured (Figures 214 &
269) and attributed to my father. According to my Dad's notes in the
book, he gave Bill the bottle in Figure 934. Anyway, thanks
for triggering the memory and now I'll sit down and read the
book and learn more about these great old bottles. Thanks
also for scanning the ridged conical one in Figure 25, which does
look like the one in this collection.

A quick look through the book doesn't mention any John E. David's
bottles....is that a rare one? Thanks again!

Newbie, your last post humbled me! Thank you for sharing that info and I surely looked them up! I feel honored!!! I have 600 plus different inks on display and examine them everyday, one of which was in Bill C's collection and bears his tag. The biggest problem I am finding is accurate information like your " John E. David's" I have found a Thaddeous David's, David's & Black even a Theodore David's, David's & Son but No John. All it seems so far have been out of N.Y.... I have been through all of digger Odell's ink books Bill C of course and the Old Inks guide by Lavina Nelson & Marth Hurley... I will keep looking, Taz This was Bills ink WC #568
