Called a Persian Saddle Flask, there is alot of debate on their age and origin with many thinking they are still made in some Mexican Village to this day. They have a following with some people and usually bring about $100-200 on E-Bay when sold...Some claim they date back to the 1600's in Asia...Jim

Most don't stand up and yours is a nice example with the extra glass snaking around the neck intact...

Hello again, tekyma,

These are chestnuts:

May I ask where you got the "Persian Saddle Flask"?

These so-called Persian Saddle Flasks have an obscure history. Not much has been written about them. There was some debate as to whether these were ever produced in America. One was found in a grave dating 1814. In general, these bottles date from the 17th and 18th century. Some were certainly used as saddle flasks. They are surprisingly common. Most, like yours, are crude and beautifully colored. Digger "

Thank you for your help Jim & Tom.
The bottle is part of my father-in-laws collection. He recently passed away.
Black glass, sodas, ancient, he had it all. I have no idea where he acquired it.

Hello teyma; I have three of the so called saddle flasks and have evaluated a lot of posted pictures like yours. I even keep an eBay report entry requested on these subject bottles. There has been a lot of them shown over the last six or seven years. There just hasn't been any good basic logic to say they are really all that old - but some have some making quality and all I can say is "That they are old looking craftsmanship." I am sure they are not going to develop much profit for a buyer.
