Well I went ahead and made my first (and 2nd 3rd & 4th) probe. What do you think? Please be gentle.

G H, yea, I got the idea from Jaken; Taper the shaft and drill the hole on top of the handle a bit smaller so the shaft can't pass through. It was acctually a lot of fun making. I love a good tinker...

Looks great, good luck with the new probes. Looks like you'll get a good soil / ash sample with that tip, good job.

Looks like it will do the job.We don't put a hole through the pipe,because if that baby gos through with pressure on it,it might go into your chest.we also weld a ball bearing on the tip.It makes it easy to open that first hole up and makes it real easy to probe.Good luck

Thanks for the feedback.
The hole at the top of the handle is about 1/8" less than the diameter of the shaft so it can't come through.
I'm going to get my first chance with it tomorow. I'm going on a guest dig to a spot that dates to 1847.
Here's hoping...
