Left side. I just realized that it has a seven-digit phone number! Either this was an old-stock bottle, or they made these longer than most people seem to think they did. I would now have to think that the label (and possibly the bottle) are from the 30s or 40s. I always thought Rexall discontinued the Owl name when they bought them out in the 30s.
Here is the right side. Sorry, this one still isn't perfect []. Better than my first attempt, though []. Thanks again. I will be happy to answer any questions. ~Jim
There is no saying the label is the original one. I know a couple of people who serach out old labels, as you can find on ebay and stick them on the appropriate bottles. That may have been the case with this one. It is still a nice bottle even if not historically correct.
That is quite possible. This bottle came from out west, where there are plenty of Owl items floating around. I'm wondering if the label might have been added later. They did have screw-cap Owl bottles like this, which are more likely to be in the era of this particular label. ~Jim
You might could tell by looking through the bottle at the back of the lable. They used water based paste or mucilage as opposed to chemical based cements used today. They will brown slightly with age and you can probably see stroke marks where it was brushed on.
I learned alot about bottles from digging, reading and research but the best stuff I learned from elderly folks, ants uncles and grand parents. They are a rapidly disapearing resorce.
Congratulations, Joel (epgorge). I will have your bottle ready to ship. Thanks to all for checking out the auction and bidding to help the forum. I will do this again in the future. ~Jim
Do I send a check or money order, paypal, to ....whom? Let me know the particulars and I will get it taken care of. It was for a good cause and you should be commended. I am looking for a bottle to auction too. Not just any bottle, but it is hard to determine what would be appreciated and bring a good price for the Forum. There are such diverse appreciations out here.
I am amazed at the attention given old soda bottles. I have a bunch that my kids would pick up and put aside while I was digging. I just threw them aside as my attention was on pre 1900's.
Thanks for all who bid. Sorry I jumped the bidding process but the short incremental climbs were killing me. It's is all for a good cuase and a great place for us to congregate for educational enlightenment..
